CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – State officials on Monday showed off some of the items to be sold during an auction of unclaimed property later this month.

WBBM Newsradio's Jennifer Keiper reports.

On a long table in the James R. Thompson Center were two glass cases that displayed a sampling of the belongings. They included jewelry and sports memorabilia.

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said his office spends years trying to track down the owners before selling the items.

Proceeds will be paid to the owners or heirs, he said, rather than going into state coffers.

Thousand of pieces will be featured during the state’s unclaimed property auction, to be held Aug. 17 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

Some of the highlights:

--a 1984 Chicago Cubs baseball signed by Ryne Sandberg

--a ticket from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition

--an 1854 Indian Princess three-dollar gold coin.
