CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The new city treasurer will be Melissa Conyears-Ervin, who beat out Ald. Ameya Pawar with 60 percent and 281,137 votes, according to the Chicago Board of Elections. That means the three top city offices will be held by women for the first time.

Early on in the voting results, Conyears-Ervin led the race with a wide lead. Although Pawar closed the gap as the night went on, he did not receive enough votes and hung behind Conyears-Ervin with almost a 20-point percentage difference.

"First and foremost, we did it," Conyears-Ervin said in her victory speech, which was met with applause and cheers from the excited crowd.

She thanked her supporters, union organizers and community members for their support and commanded her upbringing to help her get to where she is now.

"You all know I came from a union household," she said. "Hard-working men and women" are important to her.
