JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois State Troopers will be hitching rides in semi-trucks in a partnership with the Illinois Trucking Association to catch potentially dangerous drivers on the expressways.

WBBM’s Jim Gudas reports from Joliet.

“All we’re trying to do is make the roads safer for the Illinois public and the motorists,” said Illinois State Police Maj. Bob Meeder.

Troopers who are perched in the passenger seats of the elevated cabs can more easily see if drivers are texting, not wearing their seat belts, or violating other traffic laws.

The troopers radio ahead to their counterparts in Illinois State Police vehicles, who pull over offenders.

“Troopers in Trucks” was first tested downstate, but is now coming to the Chicago-area.
