RIVERDALE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Dolton West School District surprised one of its students today with honors and gifts for a good deed that is still inspiring other students and school officials.

Eighth-grader Jayera Griffin received lots of attention when she used money she’d collected to host a free Community Wash Day this month. The teen raised nearly $1,000 and paid for people to wash their clothes at a coin-operated laundry in Riverdale.

She wasn’t expecting cheers from an assembly at Washington Elementary and Junior High schools.

But she got them, anyway, on Monday.

Teachers like Katrina Garrett showered Jayera with gifts and praise. She said Jayera was always an inspiration to other students and teachers as well.

Principal Dornetta Walker says Washington schools will now establish an annual day of service in honor of Jayera.

Jayera says she’s glad to inspire more acts of kindness.
