SKOKIE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Bittersweet moments in Skokie, where a baseball diamond was renamed to honor a player who lost his fight to cancer at age 19.

Dina Brockman once asked her son, Caleb Maeir, what he liked most about baseball. He said after the game's over, you shake hands with the other team and can be their friend again.

“Caleb played sports like he lived life: with passion, with pride and always looking out for the other guy,” she said.

Laramie Park Baseball Diamond is now "Caleb Field."

Family, friends, and leaders in the community held an unveiling ceremony Monday, and then they played ball -- the first pitches thrown by Caleb's parents.

David Maeir's son was diagnosed with cancer at age 16. He had over 9 surgeries, 136 days in the hospital in 2 ½ years, and through it all, friends saw his smile.
