GURNEE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thousands of people in their vehicles lined up at Six Flags in far north suburban Gurnee Saturday to pick up donated food organized by a local food bank continuing its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was in collaboration with the theme park, the village of Gurnee and the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Northern Illinois Food Bank brought in four truckloads of food to distribute, which was made possible by donations from everyday people.

"Families don't have enough resources in order to pay all of their bills and have enough to eat," said Julie Yurko, president and CEO of Northern Illinois Food Bank. "That was been exacerbated by COVID-19."

She said before the pandemic, about 200 to 300 people would show up to the pantry's food giveaways but now the demand is about 10 times bigger. The event gave out about 3,000 meals to families.
