CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The woman who became a national celebrity when her beloved Loyola University men's basketball team reached the NCAA Final Four in 2018 celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday.

Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt marked her 100th birthday at the Far North Side campus, surrounded by hundreds of students, faculty and others.

The basketball team chaplain said she’s experienced plenty of happiness over the years.

“I have to share the joy that I shared. There’s so many problems in the world that we can’t be walking around with our heads down and our eyes closed and our ears plugged.”

Instead, she encouraged the crowd to spread joy every single day.

Gov. Pritzker declared Wednesday Sister Jean Day.
