(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The end of the Illinois stay-at-home order means the return of an old friend to Chicago-area expressways: traffic.

According to traffic count data from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the vehicle count on the Dan Ryan expressway is inching closer to the 2019 average.

IDOT counts cars on the inbound and outbound Dan Ryan at 51st street. Last Friday 151,908 cars were counted on the inbound Dan Ryan; that’s close to the 2019 daily average of 159,794.

On the outbound side, 152,543 cars passed 51st street.  The 2019 daily average was 155,770.

The IDOT numbers also show the effect of the COVID-19 shutdowns on traffic. On March 6, 171,582 cars were counted on the outbound Dan Ryan. By March 26, that number was down to 107,722.
