CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A scammer managed to get $30,000 from a senior citizen over a period of months, according to South Elgin Police.

Now, authorities want to warn others, WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller reports.

From April through most of September, the scam went on and on.

An elderly woman was conned into giving scammers more and more money in the form of Google Play gift cards, police said. That’s because when they called her, they convinced her that her computer had one problem after another and she needed to pay for repairs with the gift cards.

This went on, “all the way up to $30,000, before somebody in their family questioned, ‘How come your having financial troubles?’” South Elgin Deputy Police Chief Randy Endean said.

"It's a sad, despicable fraud, and that's why we want to reach out and get the word out."

Endean said another senior, also about 80, was cheated out of about $500 in Google Play cards.
