Sen. Dick Durbin Calls Trump's Sanctuary City Comment 'Dangerous'

April 13, 2019 - 4:26 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is reacting to President Trump’s suggestion that undocumented immigrants be sent to sanctuary cities such as Chicago.

Durbin said the President’s suggestion, which some Democrats have called political theater, is "dangerous."

“We cannot play games with people’s lives," he said.  "I was in El Paso, Texas yesterday and I saw hundreds of these young people. It’s heartbreaking that they would spend a week or a month, having given up everything they own on earth, traveling at great danger with their children to try to find some security in the United States.”

To say they’d be sent to cities such as Chicago, Durbin said, is not what America is all about.

He added: “tweets and temper tantrums” are not how you solve the problems of America.

Durbin said that America is a caring nation.  However, he added, “we can’t accept everyone who wants to be part of it.”

He said he came away with very strong feelings about the need to have a comprehensive immigration policy.
