CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Sears is closing its last remaining store in Chicago.

Employees at the store at Six Corners on the Northwest Side were told about the closure Thursday morning.

This Sears store, like others that have closed, is such a neighborhood fixture.

Portage Park resident Linda Stoll stopped in Thursday after hearing the news. The Sears location had been a part of her life for more than 40 years.

“It’s one of the biggest department stores that was around. I remember coming in here and they always had their windows decorated for Christmas and everything when I was little,” Stoll told WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller.

“I went to high school down the street, and this was a big shopping area. This was the staple of the community, and now it’s not going to be there.”

Another longtime shopper from the neighborhood was resigned to the store closing. He said waiting for the Sears store to close felt like waiting for someone to die – better to get it over with.
