School Board Resigns As CTU Demands Elected Panel

May 22, 2019 - 8:54 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mass resignations at the Chicago Board of Education did not slow down the Chicago Teachers Union's calls for an elected board.

The announcement that all seven appointed members of the school board are stepping down came hours before a previously scheduled CTU rally.

“Until you have an elected school board you’re never going to have an actual board that’s independent of mayoral power,” CTU President Jesse Sharkey said.

Teachers rallied for smaller class sizes and more support personnel.

Newly sworn Mayor Lori Lightfoot supports at least a partially elected school board. She said Wednesday she would appoint new school board members in the interim.

The board members who announced their departures were appointees of Lightfoot's predecessor, Rahm Emanuel.
