(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mother of a boy in Waukegan says a sailor made her son's birthday Wednesday, after the service member overheard the family's conversation about bad news.

Hard times have followed the Ragin family. Barbara Ragin says she lost her job, and her son, Jayden, was in ICU a week and a half ago for asthma.

A family member was supposed to wire her some money for Jayden’s birthday. But there were complications.

"My son, actually, he got upset,” Barbara Ragin said. “Because he knew that's how I was going to be able to do something for his birthday."

She said a sailor was there watching the whole thing.

"And the sailor, we've never met him in our life, and we left and he came up and he talked to my son for a second,” she said.

"And then about 30 seconds later he came out and called us back over there, and he pulled out $100 to give to my son for his birthday,” Ragin said.

Ragin said it was totally unexpected. The odd thing was it was the sailor’s birthday, too, she said.

Her son bought the service member a card.

"He looked like he was going to cry when my son gave him the card."
