RIVERSIDE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Every employee of the Riverside Police Department has given their time -- literally -- to help an officer who has Stage 4 cancer.

Riverside Police Officer Chris Kudla is 46 years old, married with two children.

And he has renal cancer.

He's fairly new to the department and ran out of sick days two weeks ago.

So, Police Chief Tom Weitzel said the police officer’s union came to him with a proposal: that officers be allowed to donate sick days to Officer Kudla.

Not only has every police employee done so, but other municipal workers have, too.

“There isn't a single department within the village that has not donated time to the Kudla sick bank program,” Weitzel said.

Officer Kudla now has 900 hours of sick time he can use for cancer treatment, the chief said.

Meanwhile, a family member has started an online fundraiser for the officer.
