CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The reward offered to solve the murder of a 3-year-old boy last weekend has grown to $13,000.

Chicago police said Mekhi James of Skokie was hit in the back as he sat in his father’s car at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and a gunman in another vehicle opened fire.

The incident occurred in the Austin neighborhood, near Ohio and Central.

The reward started at $2,000. Rev. Ira Acree said Wednesday he hopes the additional money added to the sun will spur someone to offer the information leading to the killer.

"Our community is reeling from this senseless violence. We believe that this will incentivize someone who may be afraid to speak up," he tells WBBM Newsradio's Jim Gudas.
