CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Of the four Illinois Congressional Republicans seen as vulnerable, the two downstaters won.

If there was ever an election to make you say 'wow,' it was this one.

"It's not every day you get a call from the Speaker of the House saying, hey sorry you lost. I saw CNN called and I am looking at the numbers going, but I didn't," said Republican Rep. Rodney Davis.

Congressman Rodney Davis beat Springfield Democrat Betsy Dirksen Londrigan by about 3,600 votes in the district that touches Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, and the metro-east. The seat was one of four in Illinois that Democrats targeted in their effort to win House control.

Davis’ fourth term will have him in the minority party in the House.

“Many of my friends and colleagues who worked very hard did not come away victorious like we did tonight,” Davis told supporters in Taylorville just before midnight Tuesday.

“This is an opportunity for us to hopefully put some good bipartisan legislation on the floor of the House and see and hope that we can move some good policies forward that the Trump administration has asked us to work with them on.”

Infrastructure was the first example Davis gave.
