Mets Shake Up Coaching Staff, But Not How You'd Think

June 20, 2019 - 3:40 pm

The Mets have fired pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez, according to multiple reports.

Phil Regan, 82, will replace Eiland as pitcing coach while Ricky Bones will take over as bullpen coach.

The Mets' bullpen has been a major concern all season. It is the third-worst in baseball behind the Nationals and Orioles and has blown a MLB-leading 16 saves this season.

Eiland became the team's pitching coach last season, joining first-year Mets manager Mickey Callaway. He was previously with the Royals in the same role from 2012-2017. The team is 20th in MLB in ERA this season.

Hernandez was in his first year as the Mets bullpen coach. He was previously with the Braves from 2017-2018 as their pitching coach.

The Mets have lost five of their last seven games, including two games blown by the bullpen, and have dropped to four games under .500 with the expectation that Callaway is on the hot seat. Instead, it was the other coaches on the staff who got the axe.
