One of the first dominos of the NBA's free agency period may have just fallen.

There has been much speculation about the future of Kyrie Irving after his Boston Celtics failed to live up to lofty expectations and were ultimately eliminated in the second round of the playoffs. Irving, who is from New Jersey, has long been linked with a return to the New York area when he becomes a free agent at the end of June.

Many assumed that the homecoming would be Irving signing with the Knicks, but there is now another team that plays in the five boroughs.

According to a report from the Boston Herald, Irving is preparing to sign with the Brooklyn Nets.

"According to a source with ties to Roc Nation, the organization expected to become Irving's new representative, the All-Star point guard is prepared to sign with the Brooklyn Nets when he becomes a free agent next month. A separate league source told the Herald that his team (not the Celtics) has received the same information and is operating under the belief that Irving wants to join the Nets."

Steve Bulpett, the writer of this article, is a Celtics beat writer who is considered to be very reputable.

Boston acquired Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a trade back in August of 2017 that sent Isaiah Thomas the other way. Irving spent two years with the Celtics, but missed the entirety of the team's playoff run in 2018. He struggled heavily in this year's edition of the postseason.

Before the 2019 season began, Irving told Celtics fans he was planning on staying. "If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here," said Irving. But he has now gone back on those words.

Signing Irving would be a coup for the Nets. They would be getting one of the best point guards in the league. Irving is a skillful player who has shown that he can perform in the clutch, but he is also infamously mercurial and had issues being a positive leader for the Celtics.

That being said, Irving is an unpredictable personality. He could change his mind again, so nothing is really set in stone until he actually signs onto a new contract with a team.
