CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you grit your teeth through this early blast of winter, you're not alone. Chances are your dog feels the same way.

Veterinarians said vet visits spike during the first cold blast as pets and pet owners get used to the harsh conditions.

"The biggest thing we see is irritated paws from the salt.  Some pets don't have any problem walking in it.  When they come home, they lick it, and then they get a rash from continual licking," explained Dr. David Gonsky of the West Loop Veterinary Care in Chicago.

Gonsky said pet owners should adjust their behavior to suit the temperature, and not the calendar.

"Keep the walks shorter.  Keep your pet on a leash.  Keep the walks shorter and come home early.  If you're cold, they're cold," Gonsky said.
