Real Or Fake Christmas Tree? Debate Continues

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The popularity of artificial Christmas trees has some people worried – especially those who grow the real thing.

But the owner of at least one far northwest suburban tree farm says he’s not worried.

Statistics show better than 75 percent of sales are now artificial trees, and increasing. Growers are actually so worried that they formed a Christmas Tree Promotion Board in 2015 and are running ads with the tagline, “It’s real.”

Don’t tell all that doom and gloom to George Richardson, who is so optimistic that he recently planted 12,000 trees on his Spring Grove farm.

Not all grow up perfect, but he said the smell and the sustainability are bringing people back.

Still, he has 6,000 trees from this year’s crop left to sell -- some live, some pre-cut, and time is running short.

The farm, at 9407 Richardson Road, is open until 6 p.m. daily through Christmas Eve.
