Controversial 'Bait Trucks' Curbed; Railroad Apologizes

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Norfolk Southern Railroad has bowed to pressure and will end the use of undercover “bait trucks” in the Englewood community.

In a letter to the Chicago Tribune, the railroad acknowledges the operation eroded trust between law enforcement and the community.

The railroad says the sting was prompted by the continued theft of guns and ammunition from containers. Some of the weapons have made their way onto the streets of Chicago.

The ACLU and other critics said placing a truck filled with merchandise and waiting for would-be thieves to strike in a poorer neighborhood is an inappropriate use of police resources.

The Chicago Police Department assisted Norfolk Southern’s police unit in making arrests.
