A 31-year-old mother from Chicago died of COVID-19 less than a week after welcoming her third child.

A spokesperson for the Cook County Medical examiner's office told People that Unique Clay died "as a result of COVID-19 infection." Reports say that she died at the beginning of May and "the manner of death is natural."

Clay was an essential worker as her occupation was working as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for the last two years.

The National Association of Letter Carriers said that she is believed to be the first letter carrier in Chicago to die from COVID-19. The organization reported that 30 other letter carriers have contracted coronavirus.

Reports show that at least 1,606 U.S. postal employees have tested positive for COVID-19, "with some deaths."

Clay's family said that she felt she was "coming down with a cold" during labor. While in the delivery room, the expectant mother was tested for the virus. After giving birth, her test came back positive and she was discharged from the University of Chicago Medical Center. She died several days later.

Alan Brown, Clay's father, said his daughter was running a fever while she was in labor and was confused why she was allegedly sent home from the hospital so quickly.

"When they did let her go home, they gave her ibuprofen, and we were told from watching the news that that feeds the virus itself," Brown said. "You're supposed to give them Tylenol."

It is unclear if Clay had any preexisting medical conditions before contracting the novel virus.

In a statement, the hospital said: "The University of Chicago Medicine community extends the deepest sympathy to the family. We cannot comment on individual cases due to patient privacy laws."

Clay's friends and family members want her to be remembered as a dedicated mother.

"I would just like people to know that she was really, really a nice girl, and she just gave her all to family, and I just wish this had never happened," a family friend told the outlet.
