How to Maintain Your Social Wellness While Social Distancing

    PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — July is Social Wellness Month — something specialists are especially emphasizing this year during a time when we’re distanced or isolated from friends and family.

    Online meetups can go a long way in bettering your social wellness, curbing depression and anxiety, according to Lisa Cini, founder of Best Living Tech.

    “We're mentally happier, it puts off endorphins, and we just have a better outlook on life,” she said.

    If you’re feeling particularly isolated during the pandemic, she suggests taking advantage of digital platforms to socialize — even if you feel too exhausted to log on. Make the effort and get creative.

    “You can say, ‘Hey, I want to learn how to cook this, and you always made the best recipe, so let's cook together, then have dinner,’ ” she said. “Attend a concert together, start a Facebook group when you're watching something and have chats on the side.

    “Say, ‘I want to hear our family's history or legacy and do some storytelling.’ It's an incredible opportunity for future generations.”

    And it doesn’t have to stop there. You can connect with friends over things you often enjoy together in person, just online. Exercise together or even clean up your house together.

    Cini said it’s also a great time to connect with older loved ones, who can really benefit from socialization right now.

    “The beginning thing is to have a start time and a stop time, and to be consistent,” she added. “That accountability factor is very helpful and it allows us not to slip into some bad habits.”
