Health experts now say Americans will quite possibly have to wear their face masks for much longer than anticipated.

Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Fox News that his job consisted of preparing for an outbreak like the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Johns Hopkins prepared for this by offering public health experts and law officials a blueprint for what to do during a crisis. During this study, Toner said he throughout about how face masks are a defense to stop the spread of COVID-19. He shared that the virus will not slow down in the United States as states start to reopen slowly.

“It’s clear that we are having a significant resurgence of cases in the summer, and they’ll get bigger,” Toner said. "And it’ll keep going until we lock things down again.”

Johns Hopkins University created data surrounding the coronavirus spread, which was then turned into an interactive map. The map shows the spread of the virus since late January, and how time has affected the global outbreak.

According to the map, as of July 7, there have been approximately 2,996,098 cases throughout the U.S.

Toner said until there is a COVID-19 vaccine, communities should still practice social distancing and always wear a face mask.

“I think that mask-wearing and some degree of social distancing, we will be living with — hopefully living with happily — for several years,” he said.

For those who do not want to wear a face mask, Toner said they will eventually “wise up.”
