NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday that he will support Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

“I certainly cannot in any way support President Trump this year,” Powell said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

"We have a Constitution. We have to follow that Constitution. And the president's drifted away from it," the retired general said.

Powell, a Republican who voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, said he’s worked “very close to Joe Biden on a social matter and on a political matter.”

“I worked with him for 35, 40 years, and he is now the candidate and I will be voting for him,” Powell said.

He said widespread protests this past week over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody—and Trump's response to them—shows opposition to the president is growing.

“I think it suggests the country is getting wise to this and we're not going to put up with it anymore,” Powell said.

Joe Biden, who recently secured enough delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination, thanked Powell in a tweet.

“This isn’t about politics. This is about the future of our country. Grateful for your support, Secretary Powell,” Biden wrote.

Trump, meanwhile, lashed out at Powell on Twitter, calling him “a real stiff” and “highly overrated.”

“Colin Powell, a real stiff who was very responsible for getting us into the disastrous Middle East Wars, just announced he will be voting for another stiff, Sleepy Joe Biden. Didn’t Powell say that Iraq had ‘weapons of mass destruction?’ They didn’t, but off we went to WAR!” Trump tweeted.

The president followed up the first tweet with another about an hour later: “Somebody please tell highly overrated Colin Powell that I will have gotten almost 300 Federal Judges approved (a record), Two Great Supreme Court Justices, rebuilt our once depleted Military, Choice for Vets, Biggest Ever Tax & Regulation Cuts, Saved Healthcare & 2A, & much more!”
