CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The effort to rename Balbo Drive in favor of the late Ida B. Wells is on hold, but not dead, as some might fear.

Fourth Ward Ald. Sophia King said she’s disappointed the City Council’s Transportation Committee on Wednesday did not consider a plan to rename Balbo Drive as Ida B. Wells Drive. She said she and other supporters looked forward to a public discussion.

Chairman Anthony Beale (9th Ward) said more talk is needed, amid opposition from Italian-American groups.

Italo Balbo was an aviation hero but was allied with dictator Benito Mussolini.

Wells was a journalist and anti-lynching crusader.

King said she’s willing to consider renaming other streets, like Lake Shore Drive or Congress Parkway, in honor of Wells.
