Prommus, Chicago-Based Hummus Company, Wins WeWork Creator Award

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When Anthony Brahimsha returned home from Syria in 2014, the thought of malnutrition in refugee children weighed on him and led him to think about food and nutrition differently. 

Knowing what authentic hummus tastes like, Brahimsha wanted to create a product that was healthier and more beneficial for people, putting nutrition and clean-eating at the forefront. That is how Prommus was born - an all natural, high protein, and clean label hummus.

"The hummus category has been pretty active over the past few years, but all of the innovation has been driven by unconventional flavors, rather than authenticity and functionality," Brahimsha said. “I wanted to introduce a brand that is more than hummus - at Prommus, we want to push healthy eating to an entirely new level, where we make food cleaner to taste better, all while helping the world become a more promising place.”

The Chicago-based company is headquartered in the Loop at WeWork, a company that offers workspaces for start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. 

Each year, WeWork holds a global competition for entrepreneurs, performers, startups, and nonprofits to help fund and boost their product. This year Prommus Hummus entered the Nashville WeWork Creator Awards. More than 1,700 applicants entered the competition from across the eastern United States, Puerto Rico and Ontario. Prommus was chosen to be one of six represented in the final round.

Each finalists had to pitch their ideas, business models and organizations before a live audience and judges including Ashton Kutcher, Dia Simms, president of Sean Combs Enterprises, and multi-platinum superstar duo Florida Georgia Line. Nine winners were awarded $18,000 to $360,000 in funding.

Prommus was not just the only Chicago-based company to make it to the end, but the company won second place, taking home $180,000.

Anthony Brahimsha's one minute pitch states, "In 2011, my native country of Syria broke out in a civil war. To date, it has been the worst humanitarian crisis in history, with members of my own family becoming a statistic. As the crisis deepened, I traveled to southern Turkey to help set up schools for Syrian refugee children. I quickly realized the growing malnutrition issue among the children. Learning first hand the all-natural, high-protein rehabilitation process that was used, it inspired me to think differently about the foods we eat and how they can be manufactured healthier; therefore, Prommus was born. With two patents pending, Prommus is the first-ever, high-protein, low-calorie, clean-label hummus. While our competitors use preservatives and high-fat oils, we only utilize high pressure and high-quality ingredients. Prommus stands for two things: pro for protein and mmus for hummus. More importantly is our social mission to give back to the World Food Program and help make this work a more promising place."

Brahimsha plans to use the money to expand the company's team and distribution, plus boost their marketing. 

Prommus currently offers four hummus flavors including Traditional, Avocado, Red Pepper and Kalamata Olive. They pride themselves on being 100 percent clean-label, using all-natural ingredients to add flavor and nutrients. Prommus hummus has four grams of protein per serving, which is twice as much as the leading artificially-preserved hummus brand and four times as much as the leading clean-label hummus brand.

“Our standards are high when it comes to ingredients and processing. We weren’t going to compromise with using a whey protein isolate that would do anything, but add the highest amount of protein while also improving flavor," he said.

Prommus hit the shelves in March 2018 at all Jewel-Osco stores in Chicago. The company is Chicago-focused because "we really felt that Chicago is a worldly city and a prime example of a true melting pot. It’s filled with people who want to eat well, do good in the world, and live a more purposeful life. We want to reach the engaged consumers who care about clean ingredients and transparency in how their food is produced, and also are passionate about their influence in the world.” The hummus can also be found at Strack & VanTil, Plum Market, Treasure Island Foods, Woodman's, Caputo's, Fresh Farms Market, and Pete's.

With every purchase, Prommus donates a portion of sales to the World Food Program USA (WFP), an organization supporting the United Nations’ World Food Program, the leading humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide.
