CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Gov. Pritzker is putting up $5 million of his own money to back a campaign supporting a graduated income tax in Illinois.

The campaign is called "Yes for Fairness."

The flat income tax in Illinois would be replaced by one that charges higher rates as incomes reach certain levels.

Pritzker says that’s a fair approach to taxation, though he suspects opponents will be spending a lot of money to try to convince Illinois voters to reject the necessary amendment to the state constitution. The measure will appear on the ballot next November.

Pritzker said Wednesday he doesn’t know if he’ll contribute even more money to the pro-graduated tax campaign. The governor says he hopes other supporters of the graduated tax will also contribute to the campaign.
