CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle appears poised for a stab at the Chicago mayor’s race.

Sources in Preckwinkle’s political circle say she is close to announcing the formation of an exploratory committee for a possible campaign for Chicago mayor.

The 71-year-old head of the Cook County Democratic Party would be a formidable contender, and hers was one of the names Mayor Emanuel dropped as someone who seems ready for a credible run.

Emanuel announced earlier this week he won’t seek a third term in office.

An already crowded field is expected to get even bigger, with the clear frontrunner gone.
