(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Lake County, Illinois police dog known as Dax had quite the weekend of crime fighting.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Christopher Covelli said the K-9 got his first taste of action Friday night.

"He was called to assist sheriff's deputies with a domestic battery in progress in Ingleside," Covelli told WBBM. "This male offender had choked and battered his girlfriend before fleeing."

Covelli said it didn't take long for Dax to track the suspect down.

"Dax went directly to a group of bushes, began to bark and helped authorities locate the man,” he said.

The suspect is now charged with domestic battery.

Dax and Deputy John Forlenza moved on to other cases, including helping the city of McHenry track a burglary suspect and assisting in a DUI-related hit-and-run.

Covelli said the duo's work continues to exceed department expectations.

"They're just an amazing team," he said.
