(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- West suburban Congressman Peter Roskam will not get a seventh term in the U.S. House.

Democrat Sean Casten defeated the longtime Republican incumbent Tuesday, in what was seen as a referendum on the performance of President Donald Trump, the Associated Press reported.

Roskam, a conservative Republican from Wheaton serving his sixth term, faced the stiffest challenge of his career while running in the mid-term elections halfway through President Trump's first term. Roskam at times has tried to distance himself from his fellow Republican in the White House, but Casten characterized the congressman as complicit in some of Trump's controversial moves, including the president's attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Casten, a political newcomer from Downers Grove, has a scientific background and made climate change a major issue in his campaign.

The Trump comparison made Roskam vulnerable in the suburban 6th Congressional District, which went for Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race. Roskam's seat was among dozens that were up for grabs as Democrats sought to regain control of the U.S. House.

In a similar takedown of a Republican incumbent in a suburban Congressional district, newcomer Lauren Underwood defeated Rep. Randy Hultgren.
