Pennsylvania Report On Pedophile Priests Spurs Investigation In Illinois

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The state’s top legal officer announced plans Thursday to investigate the Illinois connections with several priests named in the recent Pennsylvania grand jury report on church sex abuse involving children.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Thursday said seven priests in the Pennsylvania document have ties with this state. She said she will meet with the Archdiocese of Chicago, for starters, to learn more.

“I plan to reach out to the other dioceses in Illinois to have the same conversation and expect the bishops will agree and cooperate fully. If not, I will work with states attorneys and law enforcement throughout Illinois to investigate,” Madigan said in a prepared statement.

Madigan doesn’t offer details about the inquiry, but said, “The Catholic Church has a moral obligation to provide its parishioners and the public a complete and accurate accounting of all sexually inappropriate behavior involving priests in Illinois.”

Released earlier this month, the grand jury report from Pennsylvania graphically details decades of alleged abuse by more than 300 priests in that state against more than 1,000 child victims.
