CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The annual holiday Adopt-A-Thon is underway at PAWS Chicago on North Clybourn.

PAWS is Chicago's largest no-kill facility.

And some of the cats and dogs have been there for quite a while. Waiting for a home.

"So we have a cat named Kitty Love. She's been with us just over 1,000 days," said Erin Mayes, director of feline behavior at PAWS.

Mayes said Kitty Love has had quite the experience since coming to PAWS.

"When she originally came to us, we thought she would be happier in an outdoor environment, and so she was placed in one of our barn programs. She ran away from the barn.  We got her back.  She only had one eye.  She's a beautiful, beautiful medium-haired white cat," she explained.

Kitty Love is still waiting.

But the first success story of the Adopt-A-Thon happened while WBBM was at the facility.

"I came for a dog, originally," said Andrea Villa of Rogers Park. "But my best friend just recently adopted a cat, and she was like, 'Let's just go look at the cats.'  And finally, like the last hour, I was like, 'OK.'  And as soon as I walked in I saw her and I fell in love."

Mayes said that PAWS hopes that 100 to 150 dogs and cats will be adopted this weekend.

PAWS will be open later this weekend than usual: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
