CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Over 400 guns were turned in to Chicago Police on the South Side Saturday in an event that officials say exceeded all expectations.

Police bought enough gift cards for 325 gun surrenders, but there were 423 turn-ins. Lines out the door, around the corner and back to the alley surprised many, but Deputy Chief Dwayne Betts said he is pleased.

“We just want these guns made safe and make sure that these communities don’t have to worry about somone breaking into their home, stealing a gun and shooting somebody,” he said.

A World War One-era rifle was among those turned in. Some guns arrived loaded. There were pistols, handguns and rifles. All will be destroyed.
