CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There's new life for the former Cook County Hospital building, which had been closed since 2002.

The public was allowed Tuesday into the Hyatt Place and Hyatt House Chicago, which are at the heart of $1 billion renovation of the 106-year-old hospital site, now called Harrison Square.

John Murphy is the chairman and CEO of Murphy Development Group, which oversaw the hospital's transformation while preserving its historic façade by replacing 4,000 pieces of terra cotta.

Murphy said his father, uncle and grandfather were all doctors at the old hospital.

The redevelopment will also be home to medical offices, a day care center and a Cook County Hospital museum.
