CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of the state’s best-known political figures says she won’t run for Chicago mayor.

Several pundits had included Lisa Madigan on their short list of contenders, in part because she’s leaving the Illinois Attorney General’s Office after four terms and has campaign coffers far healthier than any declared candidate, with $2.2 million.

Madigan put an end to the speculation in a three-sentence statement issued Wednesday.

“I am a lifelong resident of Chicago. I care deeply for the city. There are a lot of challenges facing Chicago, and I plan to continue helping as a resident and not as mayor.”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday he will not seek a third term in office -- news that shifted the political landscape.
