Northwestern Hospital Marks Transplant Milestones

November 29, 2018 - 5:35 pm

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thursday was a special day for Chicagoans who give and receive a second lease on life.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital in the Streeterville neighborhood in downtown Chicago held a ceremony to recognize the 25th Anniversary of the hospital's Liver and Pancreas Program. It has now administered 2,000 liver transplants; 5,000 kidney transplants and 750 pancreas transplants.

Jim Yardley received a liver transplant five years ago.

"Today is one heck of a milestone,” he said. “There are 2,000 liver miracles and 5,000 kidney miracles. This event is so miraculous. I owe them my life. I owe several of these doctors my life."

Robert Stewart received a liver 2 1/2 years ago from a live donor and is now president of the Northern Illinois Transplant Support Group.

"It's a test,” he said. “You get a transplant, now what are you going to do about it?  And so you support people who are doing the same thing. That's what we do."

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, a proponent of organ donation, is among those who attended the event.
