CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwestern Memorial Hospital honored its 100th lung transplant patient on Friday, which also fell on the recipient’s birthday.

Grammy-nominated producer Tommy Lipnick, who's had a long association with The Smashing Pumpkins, started having lung problems eight years ago.

Last year, his health got much worse. He said his doctor told him his lungs were in bad shape.

"They looked like two charcoal bricks,” Lipnick said during a news conference with Northwestern staff.

Not quite six weeks ago, he had a double-lung transplant.

"It's like I'm back 10, 20 years ago -- that's how I feel,” he said.

Staff sang “Happy Birthday” to Lipnick, now 55, and brought him cupcakes with candles.

"That would've been really embarrassing if I couldn't blow out the candles,” he said after extinguishing them.
