Northbrook Passes Ordinance Requiring Children To Wear Bike Helmets

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Children riding bicycles in north suburban Northbrook are now required to wear helmets.

Northbrook's ordinance requires anyone under the age of 16 to wear a certified bike helmet when riding a bike; and applies to children either pedaling or riding as a passenger, as well as children in bicycle trailers. The helmet requirement covers bicycles on streets, sidewalks and public paths in Northbrook.

Violations could result in $50 tickets, though Northbrook Police Community Relations Supervisor Thomas Moore said tickets would be a last resort for repeat offenders.

"The village's goal in this is to just educate families and children on the dangers of riding a bicycle without a helmet and the possibility of severe head injuries," he said.

Moore said police will focus on outreach and education to increase helmet wearing among children and teens.

Supporters said the ordinance will help reduce the risk of severe and fatal head injuries to children in bike accidents.
