A week after trustees in north suburban Deerfield approved a ban on the possession, sale, and manufacture of assault weapons, neighboring Northbrook is taking up the issue.

Village President Sandra Frum tells WBBM Newsradio’s the subject would get a full and open discussion.

No proposed restrictions were on the agenda for Monday’s meeting, but the village attorney has been asked to research Northbrook's options.

Northbrook is one of about 20 Illinois communities that can enact a ban under a state law passed in 2013 during a narrow window and upheld in a Highland Park case taken to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case on appeal in 2015.

The village’s situation is complicated because it is home to Optics Planet, a leading online retailer of AR-15 accessories and "bump stocks" that can make them operate faster.

Because it is an online-only business, it doesn’t even have to obtain a business license from the suburb.
