(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With legal recreational pot coming soon to Illinois, the National Safety Council is urging companies to make sure employees in sensitive positions aren't using it.

The Itasca-based organization says until there's a reliable test of impairment for marijuana, employers should completely ban it for people working in positions such as drivers, police officers, doctors and child care workers.

Vice President of Government Affairs Jane Terry said the non-profit surveyed employers recently and found 81 percent are concerned pot will negatively affect their workers.

Nearly 1 in 4 companies said they would dismiss an employee found to be under the influence of legal marijuana on the job.

Terry said because other states have legalized pot in different ways, companies could look to counterparts for a variety of approaches.
