CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A non-profit housing services agency is continuing its over-four-decades run of providing affordable housing to residents who thought home ownership was out of reach.

"Home ownership means you have a say so, more of a stake in your community. You can really advocate more. You can demand more," said Rashanah Baldwin, neighborhood coordinator for the Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago, Englewood.

She said NHS's mission is to create first-time homeowners and help them keep their homes.

"We have our own set of officers who work with homeowners and first time home owners to make sure they get the best rate," she said.

If you are pre-approved for a loan through NHS, Baldwin said, you'll get a construction specialist to work with.
"If your home needs to rehabbed when you purchase it, we make sure that the work is up to date and the home is adequate before the contractor is paid," she said.

Neighborhood Housing Services Chicago said state and local programs are available to help lower your payments and housing costs, up to $15,000 in subsidies may be available to qualified buyers. Only 3-percent is required for down payment on a single-family home. You can get loans for: home improvement, energy efficiency, home safety and vintage homes.
