CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For one hour on a Tuesday night, a church basement in the shadow of the United Center is a music room.

Harmony, Hope, and Healing uses music to get people through the anxiety and trauma of violence, homelessness, addiction, and incarceration.

"The idea was to create a safe circle where people could express themselves, use music as a vehicle to help people heal, and exercise their voice in a positive way," said Founder and Executive Director Marge Nykaza.

The singers at the meeting at St. Leonard House on the West Side come from a variety of backgrounds.  Many first timers are reluctant to sing.

"The first time, I didn't do any of it.  I sat there and watched.  And most people do," said attendee Ken Romandy.

"When I first got here, the Kumbaya junk, I thought 'oh no, this is not for me,'" said attendee John Murray.

But he said the music moved his mind.

"I found I was in a peaceful place," Murray said.

Tim Brown has been with Harmony, Hope, and Healing for close to a year.

"Singing is real gratifying. It fills a real void that I had," Brown said.

Nykaza said music teaches an important lesson.

"Your beat is important, your voice is important, you in this circle are important, and you are an important member of society," she said.
