CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Dishes, clothing - whatever anybody donates, they sort it and sell it at a WINGS Resale shop.

The money helps fund WINGS' two emergency shelters, three longer-term houses, and more than 20 apartment units for women who are victims of domestic violence and their children.

Volunteer Erica Bane has worked at the Niles resale shop for seven years. She said someone she knows was a victim.

"And they didn't understand why.  And I wanted to know more of what they went through.  So I was driving past here and I saw it, and I decided to apply to volunteer here," Bane said.

Denise Urban is chief financial officer for WINGS.

"One of the first families that came through our suburban shelter when it opened, she had lost an infant in utero.  Her partner abused her to the point where she lost the baby," she said.

Urban said that was about 14 years ago.

"And she now works for a tech company.  Her two boys are in high school... And their outlook on life - there's a brightness in their eyes," she said.

Urban said WINGS is more than a place to stay.  It's a program.

"We provide them all the tools that they need to be self-sufficient to not have to go back to an abusive situation, and we're very proud that 96 percent of the families that come through our program do not go back to abuse."
