A band of more than 100 volunteer snow shovelers said that other Nature is no match for them. They plan to be out all weekend on the city’s South Side.

Activist Ja’Mal Green organized the shoveling brigade as part of his "One Block, One 'Hood, One City" initiative.  He said the ability to plow through winter defines a true Chicagoan.

"If you can make it here you can make it anywhere, because you have to know how to manage your winters," he said.

Green’s band of shovelers come in all ages and size, ranging from eager children to grizzled veterans of Chicago winters.

Green is providing shovels and gloves. They’re helping senior citizens and other Chicagoans who can no longer shovel to comply with a city ordinance, which mandates that home and business owners clear their sidewalks.
