CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago was well represented at Sunday night's Tony Awards in New York.

Veteran Chicago director David Cromer won the Best Director of a Musical Tony for "The Band's Visit," about an Egyptian police band stranded in a small town in Israel, as announced on the CBS broadcast.

It's his first Tony, after winning much acclaim and many awards during his long run in Chicago theater.

Cromer grew up in Skokie and won a MacArthur “genius” grant in 2010. He taught acting and directing at Columbia College for 15 years.

And Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member and “Roseanne” star Laurie Metcalf won a Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her work in the acclaimed revival of Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women.”

"The Band's Visit," triumphed over much flashier shows to win best musical and a total of 10 awards. The closest runner-up, with six, was the blockbuster London import "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," which won best play.
