CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Many motorists continue to use expressways as their personal trashcans and the cost and garbage continue to add up.

According to IDOT, during the first four months of this year, the state spent $36,000 picking up trash along Chicago area expressways.  IDOT spokeswoman Gianna Urgo said crew picked up 100,000 bags full of trash.

"This spring, we really did see a lot of garbage on the sides of the expressways. This happens every year, unfortunately. We wish that we could change that trend," she said.

Urgo said IDOT’s slogan is "Think Before You Throw."

"If you have garbage, just throw it in the trash. Don’t throw it on the side of the expressways. It makes it look bad. It makes us look bad and we’re really like to save our time and resources for other things," she said.
