CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 27-year-old trans woman from Chicago has filed another lawsuit against the Illinois prison system, demanding that she be protected from assaults and harassment.

Her given name, and the name on her Department of Corrections file, is Deon Hampton, but she goes by Strawberry. She is a trans woman whose attorney said has been assaulted by inmates and guards just in the two months she's been at a downstate men's prison.

And her attorney Sheila Bedi said the abuse and harassment of Strawberry Hampton started at another prison before that.

"She's attempted suicide multiple times in the past few weeks," Bedi said. "She is quite literally fighting for her survival."

Bedi said she's filed this most recent lawsuit, the third one, against the Department of Corrections because Hampton needs emergency relief, meaning she needs to be moved to a women's prison.

She said Illinois has a "dismal" record when it comes to housing inmates in the facility which corresponds to their gender expression.

A spokeswoman for the corrections department said she cannot comment on pending litigation.
