CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While the Chicago area seems to have made it through the worst of the snow, Mayor Emanuel is urging residents to stay safe as temperatures continue to plummet.

At a Sunday morning press conference announcing the deployment of new Chicago Police officers, Emanuel warned of icy roadways and sidewalks around the city. AFter the city saw a snowstorm hit the area Friday and Saturday, the city could now see a prolonged period of bitter cold.

"Please do me a favor, obviously take care of yourselves," Emanuel said. "Stay warm. If you're out there shoveling, make sure you're dressed appropriately. If you have an elderly person on your block, let's all check in on our neighbors."

The Mayor also acknowledged city workers who braved Saturday's snowstorm.

"I want to thank the men and women that were out overnight plowing and salting our streets for their work, being away from their family and making sure our streets were safe when they needed to be."
