TAMPA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Nobody ever wants to miss a flight, but at Tampa International Airport Friday, there were eight good reasons.

A serivce dog gave birth to puppies as she waited with her owner  Diane Van Atter  at the gate for a flight to Philadelphia, Pa., from Tampa, Fla.

The two-year-old yellow lab, Ellie -- short for "Eleanor Rigby" -- had seven male puppies and one female, the Tampa Bay Fire Rescue Department reported. Their crews, along with Tampa police, assisted with the delivery.

Nugget, the puppies' father, who is also a service dog, waited patiently nearby.

Tampa International Airport officials said the mama and her babies were safe.
